The Prodigal Son

The Prodigal Son is a powerful message by Dr. Steve Stewart, Senior Pastor of Bethesda Baptist Church in Ellerslie, Georgia, based on Luke 15:11-32. While many people focus on the rebellion of the younger son or the resentment of the older brother, this sermon reminds us that the true hero of the story is the loving father. It is a beautiful picture of God’s relentless love, amazing grace, and His desire to restore every person who comes home to Him.

As Dr. Stewart preached from God’s Word, I was reminded that no matter how far we wander, the Lord never stops watching for us. The father didn’t give up on his son. He didn’t replace him or forget about him. Every day he watched the road, hoping for the moment his son would return. When he finally saw him in the distance, he didn’t wait for his son to reach the house. He ran to meet him with open arms.

That image stayed with me long after the sermon ended.

What I loved most about this message was the reminder that the Lord never gives up on His children. Even when we make poor decisions, drift away, or try to live life on our own terms, God’s love never changes. He patiently pursues us, lovingly convicts us, and faithfully waits for us to return. There is no road too long, no failure too great, and no distance too far that can separate us from the Father’s love when we turn back to Him.

I also appreciated that this parable isn’t just about the younger son. Jesus includes the older brother to remind us that a person can be physically close to the Father while their heart remains far away. Whether we struggle with open rebellion or quiet pride, every one of us is completely dependent upon the grace and mercy of God.

This message encouraged me because it reminded me of God’s faithfulness throughout my own life. There have been seasons when I questioned His plan or didn’t understand what He was doing, yet He has never once let go of me. Looking back, I can clearly see His hand guiding me, protecting me, correcting me, and drawing me closer to Himself. What a comfort it is to know that our Heavenly Father doesn’t stop loving us when we stumble. Instead, He continues pursuing us with grace, mercy, and unfailing love.

Luke 15 is one of the greatest pictures of the Gospel in all of Scripture. We are the prodigal. God is the loving Father. Through Jesus Christ, we are welcomed home—not because we deserve it, but because of His amazing grace.

This message serves as a beautiful reminder that no matter where life takes us, God’s love never quits. He is always watching, always waiting, and always ready to welcome home those who turn back to Him. What an incredible picture of the grace, mercy, and unconditional love of our Heavenly Father.
